Great mtb tracks, lots of hills, pubs and beer. What more could you want? Bright has it all!
We are so lucky in Victoria. There are incredible trails almost everywhere in the State. Bright, in the Ovens Valley is the Mecca of XC MTB riding and has countless trails all over the place. Along with the Bright area, Mt Beauty is legendary for its crazy XC and DH racetracks, not to mention all the other fantastic trails. And don't get me started on the Falls Creek and Mt Hotham area.

The Bright - Wandi ride is a ripper and has a bit of everything.

It starts from the Bright Camping ground in the centre of the town. Go through the camping ground heading up the Ovens River on the right hand side. You'll see a trail take off through a fence. This trail leads all the way to Wandiligong. It's a fabulous single track that has incredibly technical sections and fast sweeping sections. You'll go through a little pine forest and come out at the Bright - Wandi road. This pine forest is one of the best single tracks going around. One you hit the road, go left, cross the bridge and go right down the single track. This is one of my all time favourites. It follows the river up the valley for about 3 kms and has some crazy tech stuff to attempt. If you can ride this the whole way without touching, you are a legend. At the end, you'll hit a bitumen road - go down this and watch for the single track taking off to the right. It's the back way into Wandiligong and ends up right near the Wandi pub.

Once at the pub, go left and up that road (dunno the name of it but it's opposite the pub). Go up this about 1.5 kms and you'll see a track called Hillsborough Track off to the left. Take this and start climbing. It goes all the way to the top of the mountain range right in front of you. It's a really tough climb. No doubt about it. Last year it was 38 degrees when we climbed it. Shit that hurt! Once at the top, have a rest. In fact, I don't need to tell you this. You'll do it anyway. At the top you'll see a 4-way intersection. The trail straight ahead goes down to the Ovens Valley / Harrietville rd. It's a killer downhill. The trail off to the right follows the ridgeline all the way to Harrietville and is really tough. I'll review that ride another time. It is incredible. But the track to the left with the climb (yes, another one) is the one I recommend. It takes the ridgeline all the way to Bright and descends in a series of fast downhills and small climbs right to the back of the town. You'll end up in someone's backyard - just go through and wave - I'm sure they won't mind.

It's about a 3-hour ride and is pretty tough. In fact, the last part with the climb is bloody tough. But the beer in the pub afterwards will never taste better.
