| If you are trying to get fit and you live in Melbourne, it can be hard to find some hills close to town to get your fitness up. I have devised a ride that has a bit of everything, but mostly a series of tough climbs to help you get yourself to a level that makes XC riding in the hills a little easier.
It takes place along the Kew Boulevard. If you do this on a Sunday, you'll see heaps of roadies out there training. But you won't see them where we are going to go!
Start at the Richmond end of the Boulevard just off Victoria St. The first part is a warm up, so I like to take it easy for a little while. Head down the Boulevard until you go under the Studley Park Rd bridge just after a fairly long but easy climb. Turn left just after the bridge and head towards poofters loop. (Melways Map ref 44 G4) Just before the gate that cuts off the loop, go left and follow the trail below and off to the left of the road. Keep following this around until you reach an intersection of trails. The easiest thing to know your way is to just keep heading straight and follow the river. At the end of this trail (which is now a single track) you'll find a good climb. It's not that long, but is rocky and technical. Most people are pretty stuffed by the time they reach the top. At the top you'll go through a small gate and find yourself at a monument at the end of the loop road. Go across the road into the island bit and follow the trails until you get to the road again. Once you're back on the Boulevard, take the small walkway just after the gates after the loop on the left down to the Kew Boathouse. Follow this along until you go by the swing bridge and then look left for the single track that follow the river's edge. It's a ripper. This comes out at a trail that is not strictly OK to ride. But if you feel like you want to, go left and follow a reasonably technical single track on the cliff by the Yarra. Eventually you'll find a set of stairs- go up this and you'll be back on the Bouly. Go left until you reach the first road on the right - this is Yarra St. It's the first of the climbs. Go right to the top of this, past and through the roundabout and then turn around at the very top Follow your footsteps back down to the Bouly. Go right when you hit the Bouly and then right again at the next road - Yarravale rd. Go up this and take the first right - Holroyd St. This is the second climb. Once at the top do a U-turn and go back to the bottom. Once at the bottom turn right and go back up Yarravale to the very top where it meets Holroyd. That's the third climb done. Do another U-turn and head back down to the Bouly. Once there turn right and then turn right at the next street Molesworth. Go up this all the way to the top - 4th climb done. Do another U-turn and go back all the way to the bottom. Then head back up Molesworth again but turn left at Redmond St. 5th climb done. Go through the park at the end and take the footpath down to the Bouly. Go right here. Now, if you are feeling good, take the small single track on the left of the Bouly that follows the road all the way to the Chandler Highway. It's great - and look out for the very tough climb on the left just after you go under the Eastern Freeway Bridge. It'll take you to the top of Dainese corner on the Bouly. Then once at Chandler, go back up the Bouly until you hit the small footpath that you came down before from Redmond St. Now just do all the climbs you have done in reverse.
It's pretty tough, as the climbs up these roads are steep and sharp and there's not much time to recover. But do this a couple of times a week for a few weeks and you'll be looking any climb in the eye with confidence.
